This coffee comes to us from the Gicumbi district of Northern Rwanda.
Nova Natural is named for the washing station that processes the surrounding farm’s coffees, the Nova Washing Station. Agnes Mukamushinja and her husband Felix Hitayezu bought the washing station in 2013 and have greatly increased its operations, storage capacity, and positive impact on the community since that time. When Agnes and her husband bought the facility, their goal was, and still remains, to use the production of high quality coffee as a means to transform and better the lives of those around them. Their mission statement even reads, “Being a women-centered washing station, Nova Coffee is committed to developing the neighboring community into specialized coffee farmers that produce the highest quality coffee as well as to enhance social cohesion in order to create more jobs and eradicate poverty.”
Through the hiring of women heads of house to work the facility, Agnes has ensured that stable jobs are available for the community and that dedicated workers will uphold standards of quality, resulting in coffee production that will bring the highest profit possible. This money then goes right back into improving the facility and creating more product, thereby creating more jobs.
The labor of love that is the Nova Washing station is truly unique, which is a quality that this coffee embodies quite well. Roasted on the lighter side to bring out its fruit-forward notes, this coffee is endowed with notes of lime and raspberry. A crisp, juicy acidity paired with a smooth, dark chocolate make for a delightfully silky finish.
